Haltwhistle Is Something Special (HISS)
This new project, in partnership with Tyne Valley Community Rail Partnership and Northern Rail aims to celebrate our local culture. The plan is to produce a series of poster exhibitions about things that are a feature of life in Haltwhistle and the local area; quoits, leek shows, trail hounds and Cumberland & Westmoreland Wrestling immediately spring to mind but there are surely many more examples. We'll be looking for volunteers to research and write about the subjects and photographers to provide photos. We plan to secure funds so that the posters can be professionally designed, printed by Northern and exhibited in the station waiting rooms and online.
Open meeting to launch HISS at
7.30pm on Weds 18th October in the Old Booking Hall at Haltwhistle Station. Refreshments.
Do come along - ideas and enthusiasm needed!

 Apple events
It's apple day at Hexham Farmers' market on Sat 14th October, 9am - 2pm
Apple identification, apple pressing and local apples for sale.
Also on 14th Oct. between 1 and 4pm there's apple pressing at
Greenholme, Bewcastle, CA6 6PW.
All are welcome to come and help turn any of your surplus apples into juice, but please bring your own containers!

Humshaugh Village Shop will be pressing donated apples on 14th & 15th October. Please take apples to the shop between 10am and 3pm. Helpers welcomed! Last year the shop volunteers made and sold a record breaking 800 bottles of local apple juice.

 Go Local invites you to their
Harvest Supper and Halloween Quiz Night
on Monday 30th October, 7 pm, White Swan Ovingham.
The evening includes a pumpkin carving competition - we are looking forward to this years crop of creative works which will be displayed at the front of the pub. All in all a very entertaining night.

Food is the most basic human need and we see too many people living a daily struggle to put food on the table largely because of benefit problems, health challenges, low pay and/or debt. Around half of the people we help only needed to visit us around 4 times to get them through a tough few weeks. The rest need our support for a number of months, to help people in this position we have a team of Volunteer Support Workers in our Food Banks in Prudhoe Hexham and Haltwhsitle, over the last year they having been dealing with a 100% increase in demand and we need more Volunteers to join our team. Every day we see how Poverty excludes people from the rest of society, most people who come to the Food Banks are deeply ashamed to have to ask for food and feel overwhelmed and very alone with the problems they are facing. Our Volunteer Support Workers offer a caring friendly person to listen to them, help them make difficult phone calls, access services and online resources and fill out forms. Our training starts in November and covers Welfare Rights, Debt and Finance and Mental Health Awareness. Volunteers must be able to commit to at least 2 hours each week client time and 1 hour a month for training and management support.

Everyone needs a safe, secure and affordable home to live in, but it's getting harder for people on low to moderate incomes to access housing where they want and need it to be located.
